There are times that walk up to you, like the mailman does to your mailbox.
They deliver messages too, sometimes. Or memories.
I was thinking about this time when my parents sent us on a treasure hunt over 17 years ago in the Channel Islands.
My sisters and I were sitting on the back of the boat when a bottle floated by, bobbing in the waves like it didn’t have direction. Although, now I know it did.
And my dad said “Wait, what’s that bottle?”
And curious as ten and seven and five years tend to be, we dove and grabbed for it; knowing that of course, there could be a message in it like the story books that sat on our shelves had said.
Inside was a map, in our mom’s handwriting and on perfectly crisp paper, but none of those clues mattered.
And the map told us where to go, tugging us with its directions towards trees marked with X’s and shells in the sand and ultimately a cave with a red and black plastic box in it, not unlike ones I had seen at Home Depot.
And there was treasure inside it that looked a lot like the beaded necklaces I had longed for at Party City.
But opening it was magical. Like petting a deer or holding a firefly or seeing a shooting star.
And I knew it was there because of my parents, but that almost made it more so.
To feel that someone loves you enough to mark trees with charcoal and hide a box of plastic toys bound to cause fights and messes and carry it across the pacific so that you could find joy in the woods.
|Catalina Island Skate Classic // need to work on my posture!|
+This past weekend we headed to Catalina to celebrate my birthday as a family and an early Mother’s day, since Scott and I will be at a wedding this weekend.
+Our crew was a little bigger this time around as my sisters both brought boyfriends for the first time. But don’t worry (like I was), it went well! We like them 🙂
+Would anyone be interested in a “What to do in Catalina” kind of guide? I’ve been thinking about making one…
+I hope you have an awesome Wednesday! Somehow, I caught a cold just after this weekend ended. I say somehow because with all the kids I’ve worked with, I like to think I’m immune. Apparently that’s not the case.
